Pets and the Elderly

Companion pets play an important role in the lives of people today. Studies have shown that pet ownership can result in better physical and mental health for their owners. Pets play an especially important role in the lives of the older members of society who tend to be less active and often become victims of social isolation.

The presence of a pet in an elderly person's life can provide a sense of self worth, an incentive to get active and can act as a common denominator for conversation. In the past, the physical demands of pet ownership have meant that the elderly have had no choice but to avoid owning pets or even surrendered them.

Whilst the Pet Loo is not by any means an excuse to not exercise your animal it does provide an alternative to frequent runs up and down stairs to allow them the opportunity to go to the toilet. The reality is that this may prove too much for some!
