FAQ

I need help potty training a dog that’s more than one year old...

If an action is followed by praise or reward, after a period of time an animal will learn to repeat this action. This simple theory applies in training your pet.

Training a dog to go to the bathroom is as simple as applying basic toilet training principles:

• Place your pet where you want them to go at toilet time. Dogs usually relieve themselves after a sleep, after they eat and after a play session. Younger puppies may need to urinate as frequently as every 30 minutes.
• Keep your pet at that spot until it relieves itself.
• Praise your pet when it does so.

Repetition of this action will eventuate in an animal trained to use the designated spot or even a product like The Pet Loo.

Training an older dog may take a little more time and patience but if you invest the time, you will reap the rewards. Some dogs may instantly get it from the word “go” while others may need a little extra help. You will need to put in some serious time and effort to rectify this problem but it will be rewarding in the end! You need to take them out and wait however long it takes for them to go. Dogs respond much better to praise than punishment so you need to find a way to get him/her to engage in behavior that is worthy of praise (and that is waiting it out). Once this happens and you are able to consistently praise him/her for doing the right thing, s/he will respond favorably. In the meantime, when s/he is inside, keep your eyes on them at all times (you may need to restrict their access to some parts of the house for the short term) and if they look at all suspicious, take them out right away - not by carrying - but by encouraging them to follow you.

Also be sure to clean up after their messes in the house with good quality cleaning products that get to the source of the smell and break it down - not those that just mask if for the short term). A liquid, enzyme-based product will be best for this, such as Whiff Off and/or Liquid Ate, which get to the source of odor or stain to eliminate, not cover them up.

My dog won’t go to the bathroom outside.

There are products available that help you train your pet to go to the bathroom. Instinctively pets are territorial so if they smell a scent of another dog's pee, they will be inclined to mark over the top of it.

Pet Loo developed "Skip to my Loo" which is a unique attractant that helps you to toilet train your best friend!

The scent has been designed to attract and encourage your dog (or puppy) to relieve itself in an area designated by you. It makes a perfect companion for The Pet Loo and can be used indoors or out.

So we're clear, Skip to my Loo is not a smelly extract of animal feces; instead, it's a scientifically formulated solution that mimics animal urine which attract your puppy - it's easy to use and easy to apply.

It's important to note that constant praise and reward for doing the right thing will also ensure he/she does the right thing over and over again…they simply just want to please you!

How do I get my dog to go outside after potty training on puppy pads/newspaper?

The issue you're facing is "surface association" because your dog is trained to go on an unrealistic surface (when I say that, I mean it’s not a natural surface that you find in a park or nature strip or backyard). In simple, your pet is looking for that pad when out on the walk…it's unnatural to him/her to go on grass – let me explain.

If your pet is trained to toilet on Puppy Pads or newspaper in a specific area, simply place a product like The Pet Loo in that area, and put the pad/paper on top. Each time you need to replace the pad/paper, cut it in half so that more and more of the synthetic grass can be seen underneath. Eventually your pet will not need the pad or paper at all.

If your dog is reluctant to step up onto the Loo during this initial stage, you can use a similar technique; take the synthetic grass off the base unit and place the pad/paper on top of the grass and on the ground, in the area that your dog prefers to toilet. After a day or so of successful toileting on the grass and paper combination, you can then introduce the base unit to your dog by placing it next to the synthetic grass. Allow your dog another day or so before placing the grass and paper back on top of the Pet Loo. Only then, once your pet is confidently using their Loo, should you start halving the paper/pad on top of the grass.

How can I potty train my puppy who goes to the bathroom wherever he/she wants?

Before launching into the epic adventure that is toilet training a dog or pup, it can help the process if you put yourself in their shoes.

So let's look at the facts: an 8-week-old puppy, when awake and active, will need to relieve itself on average about every 20-40 minutes, after every meal and after every sleep. Puppies don't start gaining control of their bladder and bowel functions until they are around several weeks of age. This is also the age that a puppy will start developing preferences about where they will go - a vital stage to be learning to toilet on their Pet Loo.

Many puppies may need 15 to 20 minutes of sniffing and circling before they are comfortable enough to go to the 'loo.' The sniffing and circling is very important, however, this should not become a playtime or play place. Because of this, keep in mind 'play areas' when choosing a location for your Pet Loo.

One of the biggest problems people have with toilet training a puppy can arise from being new to pet ownership – to be specific, when supervision of your puppy stops and a toileting 'accident' occurs inside the house. If this is allowed to happen often enough, the pup will soon be conditioned to toilet inside, wherever they like.

We've all been new pet owners at some stage and understand that it can be very easy to become distracted by even the smallest of things, however, if you are too busy to watch over your pup then it is very important that the puppy not be allowed to just wander about the house.

At any time that you are unable to supervise your puppy then s/he should be restricted to a safe, confined area (i.e.: a gated laundry, bathroom or a crate). A location with easy-to-clean flooring, like tiles, is preferable. This way if an accident occurs you are less likely to get overly upset – body language plays a massive role in communicating to animals. Also, by restricting the area that they can access, your pup will be more likely to choose their Loo to toilet on, rather than their eating or sleeping spaces.

The key with toilet training puppies is consistency. Much like humans, all dogs are individuals; therefore you may need to adapt your training methods to suit your best friend. However, whichever approach that you choose it's important that you stick to it! Don't give up as toilet training can take up to 2-3 weeks! Remember there is no overnight or instant fix when it comes to toilet training!

My dog is house trained but just recently started going inside the house.

Two things here could be playing a factor:

1. His/her routine has recently changed – so they’re acting out!
Make sure s/he is still getting the love and attention and walks that s/he has always received. Dogs like routine and if that’s altered, you'll know about it.

2. S/he is being territorial.
In line with pet behavior, they’re just marking their new spot (although not ideal for you). As a result, you need to redirect his/her attention to positive places to go. Skip to My Loo, a product by Pet Loo, is a unique attractant that helps you to toilet train your best friend!

It's important to note that constant praise and reward for doing the right thing will also ensure s/he does the right thing over and over again…they simply just want to please you!

On the other side, you now need to clean up and make sure there is no scent in your house from other pets so s/he doesn't continue to mark over it. In this case, another product by Pet Loo is an item called "Whiff Off." In simple: Whiff Off is an all-natural way of eliminating tough odors. It works by getting to the ‘source’ of the problem to eliminate the odor-causing fats and proteins, instead of just masking them. Whiff Off can also be used as a training aid - it contains a special blend of deterrents to discourage your pet from future toileting accidents.

Help! My dog is peeing all over the house!

At any time that you are unable to supervise your puppy then s/he should be restricted to a safe, confined area (i.e.: a gated laundry, bathroom or a crate). A location with easy-to-clean flooring, like tiles, is preferable. This way, if an accident occurs you are less likely to get overly upset – body language plays a massive role in communicating to animals. Also by restricting the area that they can access your pup will be more likely to choose their Loo to toilet on, rather than their eating or sleeping spaces.

With a dog that has constant access to water, pee breaks twice a day is not enough. You need to watch for signs that s/he needs to use the bathroom early (sniffing, restlessness, circling) and take them out BEFORE they have the chance to go inside. This allows you the opportunity to praise them when they do the right thing and not punish them for doing the wrong thing. When you are able to do this consistent for a few weeks, s/he will hopefully be able to indicate to you when they want to go outside, i.e. sitting/pawing at the door, barking or whining to go out. The responsibility is on you to stop them from making the mistakes and you'll see how well they respond to doing the right thing if given the chance.

Clean Soiled Areas

Smells arising from previous accidents can encourage your dog to toilet in that location again. It is important that stains and smells are removed from these inappropriate toileting locations by using products like Whiff Off and/or Liquid Ate, which get to the source of odor or stain to eliminate, not cover them up.

How can I get my cat to go to the bathroom in the litter box?

Animals learn by association - the central idea is that the transition from where it's doing it now to the litter box or even a product like The Pet Loo. It can be accomplished in a series of stages. While it's great to go from "zero to hero" overnight, the truth is the majority of pets will need to adapt to a series of small changes, allowing your pet time to adjust before you make another small change.

Please note, if at any time your pet goes backwards a few steps, this is an indication you're pushing him/her too far too fast. Slow it down or even back up a stage or two and try again, this time slightly slower.

Remember your pet only wants to make you happy, so continual praise and reward is the key!

What to do: Training & Staging

Begin by having the rug near the litter box or alongside The Pet Loo - make sure your pet knows where it is and uses it. Let this be as is for a few days!

Next, put the rug in the litter box or on top of The Pet Loo. Allow this to be as is for another few days!

A lot of pets recognize the feel of a particular surface and associate it with behavior. This has been the key to the success of The Pet Loo for Dogs. Dogs go to the park / backyard / nature strip and recognize the grass as an area to go toilet on. Again, if they are praised for going toilet on this surface, they will repeat the behavior because they know it makes you happy (who knows, they might even get a treat for doing so).

Slowly over the course of the next week or two, reduce the size of the rug until you're either left with just litter (in a cat box) or just left with the plush Pet Loo grass on a Pet Loo.

I’m thinking about getting a puppy but work a pretty busy schedule. How will this affect housetraining?

Something to consider is stimulation for your pup. There are daycare places you can take your pet while you're away for extended periods of time – you need to consider this as leaving your pet on its own for extended periods of time can create boredom and in turn they can play up by eating things you don't want them to eat. It's also not a high quality of life for your pet.

If you’re only talking about a period of 4-5 hours a day, so I wouldn't think it will be too out of control for you. Just ensure they have food and water accessible, and with water comes the need to Loo – so ensure you have that covered, too!

What about faeces?

As you would in a normal backyard or park, simply scoop the faeces from the top of the unit and dispose of it in a garbage bin.

What size Pet Loo is right for me?

The Pet Loo has been designed for medium to large breeds of dogs, while the Mini Wee can be used by small and miniature breeds of dog. The Kitty Kat is not just limited to use by cats, but can also be used by rabbits, guinea pigs and other small furry critters.

Can I buy a Kitty Kat for my dog?

If your dog is a "Tea-Cup" breed or the size of a cat or smaller then The Kitty Kat Pet Loo will function in the exact same way at a Mini or Original.

Just make sure your pet has ample room to circle before going Loo and ideally if you have the space and you're unsure they would be better suited to a Mini Wee Pet Loo instead (just to be safe)

How do I clean it?

Your Pet Loo comes with Cleaning Instruction inside the box. You can also view a copy online by clicking education then cleaning instructions.

Please note that Pet Loo grasses should not be washed or dried in household washing machines or electric driers. Nor should chemical cleaners be used on the unit.

How often do I have to change the synthetic grass?

While we have gone to great strengths to make Pet Loo grasses as durable and tough as possible, Pet Loo Grass will need replacing overtime. This will depend on how often you clean the Loo, how many dogs are using it and the Loo’s positioning. Purchasing new grasses is at the Pet Loo owner’s discretion.

Can I move The Pet Loo around or does it have to stay in one place?

You may need to do this in the crucial training stage, however please note that although your dog may be using their Pet Loo confidently, a sudden change to their toileting habits may confuse them. Make sure that if you are moving the location of The Pet Loo, that your dog is introduced to the Loo’s new position promptly and in a positive manner. The Pet Loo is suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

Do I have to put it together myself?

The Pet Loo is bought as one piece. The work involved in assembling the product has been done for you, allowing you to simply enjoy its benefits.

Can I buy more than one and join them together?

If The Pet loo is being used by multiple dogs then this concept is ideal. The Pet Loo has been designed so that two or more units can easily be placed next to one another to create the feel of a park.

Can my pet sleep and eat on The Pet Loo?

Any activity other than toileting should not take place on or near the pet loo.

How does the product work with male dogs that want to lift their leg?

Generally when a male dog cocks his leg, he does so to mark his territory.
Something we advise to try is for the owner to get a small plastic pot-plant container and tip it upside down, placing it on the centre of The Pet Loo. This will give the dog something to cock his leg against. He may not understand what he’s to do at first, depending on his age, so this trick may require supervision at a time when he would normally urinate. After all, dogs are creatures of habit.

You may want to put him on a lead, pick him up and place him on the Loo until he urinates against the pot. Once he’s doing this on his own, the supervision can stop and over time, gradually take the pot away.

My puppy keeps chewing the synthetic grass and pulling it off The Pet Loo. What can I do?

We do not fasten the synthetic grass onto the base unit as the fasteners would act as a trap for urine and faeces.

However, Velcro dots, purchased from your local haberdashery shop can help to act as a temporary fastener while your dog gets accustomed to their Loo. We do recommend that this is only a temporary solution though, until your dog is using The Pet Loo confidently.

My catchment jug has gone missing. Where can I purchase a new one?

Pup-Pee Solutions does not generally deal in spare parts. In saying that however, please contact our Head Office, as in most cases we can come up with a solution for you.

Why is my Pet Loo starting to smell?

Although you may be following the cleaning instructions closely, every dog is different – and so is their pee! Age, sex and diet all play vital roles in what waste your dog produces. So if you are finding that your Loo is starting to smell then Wee Care is what you need.

Wee Care is an enzyme based solution designed to eliminate unwanted odors that urine/faeces cause. It works by breaking down the fatty particles and proteins found in urine/faeces. Wee Care, like our entire enzyme cleansing range, is chemical free and 100% safe for people, pets and environment.

For more information on Wee Care, please select Wee Care in the "Products Tab".

You may also like to consider Pee-Pods which trap and encapsulate airborne odors and bacteria... Together Wee Care & Pee-Pods are unmatched when it comes to Pet Waste

My Synthetic Grass seems to be losing grass blades around the edge. Should this be happening?

Pet Loo grasses do not have finished edges as it would be a trap for urine and faeces. If the mat is cut on the tuft it is normal for the grass to shed at the edges, just as a new carpet would. This should subside over time and is nothing to worry about in terms of the product’s effectiveness.

My Pet Loo slips across the floor whenever my dog jumps up on it

You may want to purchase non-slip rubber dots or a non-slip mat if the surface you are putting your Loo on is a shiny/slippery surface.

Why does my Pet Loo Replacement Grass not fit The Pet Loo?

If you purchased one of the very original Pet Loo’s (circa 2006-2007) you will notice that it is 2 cm larger in both width and length. Replacement Grasses for these Loo’s are not always in stock at your local pet store. However, these larger grasses can be specially ordered in for you.

What is Potty Exchange?

In 2003, Pet Loo came to market and revolutionized the way pets go toilet around the globe. With its success a category has emerged with a bunch of inferior Pet Potty’s entering the market.

Their position is to win the consumer over at a price point and while that might be enticing this is only short lived as these other Potty’s are only lasting 3-4 months before being thrown away.

As a result, we have stepped up to ensure that pets and pet owners all over the world are not stuck by developing the “Potty Exchange” program.

Here is how it works….

Provide us with a receipt or picture of your purchase of the "other dog potty" and we'll apportion credit 50% of the amount you spent towards your purchase of a NEW Pet Loo.

What is the difference between Degradable and Biodegradable in Poop Bags?

Degradable plastics are oil based and break down through chemical reactions rather than the activity of microorganisms. Put simply they only start to degrade when they come into contact with pet waste rather than the elements of our environment. Where as if they were biodegradable the process of breaking down starts right away.

The bio in biodegradable means that any tiny, living organisms (even just in the air) will start the degrading process…. We would hate for our products to have been on a shelf breaking down and fail you when you go to use them. Pet Loo has you and your pet first and foremost – PERIOD!

Can I recycle my used Poop Bag?

You should not recycle a used bag. Bags must be properly disposed so they can begin their decomposition process.

Tell me about the maintenance of Fresh Air Litter?

Fresh Air Litter is non-clumping so only solid waste removal is required (no more scooping clumps)

No Clumping? I don't understand... why don't you clump?

Why we don’t clump?

Most litters on the market today clump to prevent urine sinking to the bottom of the cat litter box. As a result and as a cat owner you are forced to scoop out the clumps in order to keep your current litter box clean and tidy – hoping that makes it odorless.

Fresh Air cat litter does not NEED to clump in order to stay pristine and that’s based on the fact that the second urine hits our Litter it is broken down at a molecular level and the ammonia becomes nitrogen and the bacteria is killed by the Co2 released from the pad.

The result, there is no urine left in the box & any bacteria is eliminated!

What occurs is that the urine is eliminated because it is changed into nitrogen and water which evaporates - simplistically that's why Fresh Air Cat Litter last 2 months.

Never scoop again!

How does Fresh Air Litter affect the environment?

Fresh Air Litter is made form all natural mineral that is inert and 100% safe (even if ingested accidently by the pet).

Other clay Cat Liters turn to a cement type paste when used and are a major concern for landfills.

Fresh Air Litter is a natural mineral that can be added to soil safely for disposal and has been known to actually improve the quality of soil

Bacteria in the litter box feeds off of the biological excretions of urine and feces and rapidly mulitplys spreadins all throughout the box. Unfortunately removing the clumps does not remove the bacteria. It’s still their!!

Fresh Air Litter has a Patented Odor Eliminating Pad™ and does not require any removal of clumps to remain pristine. Its litter-ally maintenance free

What causes odor in litter boxes?

The basic causes of litter box odor are as follows:

Biological excretion
Odor Causing Bacteria
Odor Molecules

Step 1 : Your beloved feline expels feces and urine also known as Biological excretions

Step 2 : Bacteria feeds on the feces with the urine and grows at very rapids rates producing lots and lots of odor molecules

Step 3 : Odor molecules from the biological excretion and odor causing bacteria interact with your nose and suddenly you are not breathing so easy anymore.

Why did Pet Loo create Fresh Air Litter?

Recognizing a void in the marketplace, Pet Loo developed the world’s first and only Triple Action Odor & Bacteria eliminating litter. Fresh Air Litter, boasts a triple action odor control that eliminates fecal odor, urine odor and odor-causing bacteria

What are the biggest concerns for owners when it comes to cat litter?

Bacteria and odor control are two of the biggest concerns cat owners have when it comes to litter. While other litters can minimize the smell of ammonia, none actively deal with the true source of the problem – bacteria

Most litters on the market clump, Fresh Air doesn't - here's why!

Most litters on the market today clump to prevent urine sinking to the bottom of the cat litter box. Fresh Air Litter has a Patented Odor Eliminating Pad™ that prevents bacteria growth in the litter box and does not require any removal of clumps to remain pristine, providing a maintenance-free litter solution that lasts two months.

In addition to being the most powerful and effective odor control cat litter on the market, Fresh Air Litter offers the following benefits:

A proprietary syrup that coats the litter to minimize dust

No silica dust

The world’s first litter containing a patented carbon pad

Granular-sized litter designed specifically to minimize tracking

Non-clumping so only solid waste removal is required (no more scooping!)

Made from an all-natural inert mineral that is 100% safe (even if ingested accidently by the pet)

Not only is Fresh Air Litter so advanced that it can do all of this, but it also weighs less, costs less and lasts twice as long!

How long does it take for Pet Loo Poop Bags to completely decompose?

That question has many answers, but you have to ask several more questions to answer it correctly.

Where is the bag ending up?
Is it in direct sunlight or 40 feet under ground?
Is it a wet or dry environment?
Is the bag frozen or extremely hot?
What else was inside the bag when it was thrown away?

Temperature & climate make a difference.

We add an additive, called EPI, that increases the rate of the degradation and physically disintegrates our bags within a few weeks to 1-2 years, depending on the disposal environment.

Check out the EPI web link for more information (probably more than you would ever want to know but thats just us being detailed in our work and supply of the best products for your pet).

How can I prevent my cat from digging up the Carbon Pad at the base of the Fresh Air Cat litter?

Here are a couple of ways to address the issue of your feline friend digging down to the bottom of the pan and catching the pad with its claws.

Buy three boxes of 14 lb litter at a time and use 1.5 boxes each time you fill your extra large litter pan. This should give you the depth needed to prevent your cat from reaching the bottom.

If your cat is a "digger" , meaning it likes the texture of Fresh Air so much that she digs in the litter for fun as opposed to just to bury after doing her business, then you have two additional solutions:

Remove the pad. Fresh Air litter works without the pad. However without the pad you can only expect about 30 days before you will have to change out the litter due to loss of the pad's bacteria growth inhibition. Even without our patented carbon pad, you should still see our litter last at least twice as long as your current litter... yes, Fresh Air is that good!!!

Does Fresh Air Cat Litter Cause Silicosis?

The information you may be reading about Zeolite is not representative of our Fresh Air Cat Litter.

When people hear silica, they automatically think of silicosis which is a respiratory disease caused by breathing in particles of silica. Our zeolite contains no free silica therefore does not cause silicosis.

When zeolite was formed X thousands or millions of years ago, the chemical structure involves a bond between the aluminum and the silica. There is no unbonded silica therefore there is no chance of ingesting silica causing silicosis.

Does Fresh Air Cat Litter Container Erionite?

Their is a misconception with zeolite has been regarding the emergence of articles about zeolite deposits with Erionite.

Erionite is a carcinogen which plagues a few zeolite deposits around the world. Fresh Air Cat Litter contains NO ERIONITE

What way does the Carbon pad go?

Place the Carbon Pad at the base of your cat litter box shiny side down - VERY IMPORTANT!!!!

Do you think you have seen dust in our Fresh Air Cat Litter?

We assure you that Fresh Air Litter categorically contains No Dust

What you might be seeing is "Fine particles" which may appear in the air from time to time during the initial pour or when moisture from your cats urine makes contact with the litter.

These fine particles are not dust as is commonly found in traditional clay litters.

Fine particles of Fresh Air Litter are pure Zeolite which is an inert volcanic mineral that is 100% safe for your family and pet.
